The MetroCard is taking another step toward obsolescence.

Smart cards, already in use for a pilot program on the 4 5 6Green subway line, will soon be tested on the city's bus routes.

Smart cards are small passes that can be affixed to wallets and key chains and waved in front of scanners, such as in the checkout line at supermarkets. The technology is already widely used in Asia, and can allow riders to seamlessly move between transit systems without purchasing different tickets.

saw that at a 6 train station. ny is finally catching up to hong kong, singapore, and taipei. should be able to use them at duane reades too
